** SONGMASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: BETWEEN US, MATERIAL IMBALANCE IS IMMATERIAL. AMONG YOU OR NOT, OUR MESSAGES SPEAKS TO YOU AS YOU. WE ARE AS EXEMPT FROM ACCOUNTABILITY AS YOU, WE ARE AS RESPONSE-ABLE FOR OURSELVES, FOR OTHERS, AND FOR YOU... AS YOU ARE FOR US. **
WE SHRUG the vanity, politicking, and futile warmongering of our co-inhabitants on Sagan’s pale blue dot. As embrightened musicians, we liken our species to being one note in the harmony that is the ‘uni’- (one) ‘verse’ (part of a song)… which due to our being out-of-rhythm with nature, is bound to be a cacophonous and short one (our failure-bound state is why you see a myriad of decaying institutions frantically re-orienting all sectoral systems to put “SUSTAINABILITY” first). Sustainability for us doesn’t mean sorting our recycling when the world’s industries are behind most of the carbon. It’s doing all we can to hard-push the musical ‘SUSTAIN’ guitar/piano pedal (or synthesized ADSR envelope) to prolong that pristine note of our existence. Albeit, focusing on our own part of that note alone as individuals isn’t at an audible volume. We have to do it together.
How? Most of we musicians, venue owners, festival organizers, sound engineers, audiophiles and fans, save a few of us Davos regulars, are left outside this conversation for an opportunity to influence the global agenda. Left to our own devices, we do what musicians have always done to re-align worlds…
SO YES, FOR REASONS ENTIRELY UNIQUE TO EACH, BOTH ALTRUISTS AND RANDIAN OBJECTIVISTS among us are indeed impacting humankind by performing at unpaid charity-benefit gigs to raise money for various singular causes, or going independent to be able to influence society through their music’s messages. OUR lyrics cried Freedom, incited Rebellion, invoked the Self for spiritual liberation, preached Christ, praised Gaia, proclaimed Peace, espoused Courage, celebrated Love. YET REGARDLESS, all of our Symbols | Icons | Masks continue to be assimilated and distilled into products of consumerism, subverting our vital creativity and future-forward wisdom, because few of us have mainstream power! WE HAVE OTHER POWERS.
(As an aside, some got a bit further and organized global campaigns, like Playing for Change and other collective movements. Their virality still dissipated in the sea of recorded noise, swallowed into Anderson’s ‘long tail’ of content and hidden outside the personalized halls of mirrors made by Pariser’s ‘filter bubbles’ of big data. The civic and civil stability this has earned the world (at a cost) will prove fleeting. Alan Watts had a point about the complexity we are trying to control being beyond us and our AI, ever-needing police to police the police. The best police for us in the current post-fragile status quo is Sting’s Police, sending out an SOS.)
WE KNOW that it is idealistic and fantastical to assume that the above alone will effect true change. For us to make a LASTING impact on the world with our vocation that wields a primal cognitive medium as sound, one that goes beyond a screech in time, needs new thinking, new feeling, and new ways. And this is why an unprecedented series of personally rewarding and meaningful interplays between we purposeful artists, our fans, inventors, philosophers, policymakers, engineers, and the wider public – starting small and humble, many locales in a moment, growing steady momentum over time – will eventually build-up to a [force-majeure notwithstanding] INFINITE track of EPIC improvisational drops and never gets boring (unlike The Song That Never Ends).
TIME, what a concept. Oh how well do we all make it stop when that metronome click is ours. Both Alan Moore and Alan Parsons talked about the absence of the future and the past in the present.
Oscillation is the property of our sound, our light, emotions, tides, seasons, economies, and TIME.
OUR BOLDEN BASS GUARDS THE OPEN SPACE:
whoever vibes is the right person, when it reverberates is the right TIME, whatever is improvised should’ve been, and when the song’s over, it’s over.
